A Comparison of Stem Peroxidases in Bush and Vine Forms of Squash (Cucurbita maxima Duch.and C. pepo L.)1

J. B. LOY

Department of Plant Science, University of New Hampshire Durham 03824

Total peroxidase activities and peroxidase isozymes were compared among 10 bush- and vine-squash cultivars of Cucurbita maxima Duch. and C. pepo (L.) Several qualitative variations of isozymes were detected between C. maxima and C. pepo, and some differences were evident among varieties of C. pepo. There were no qualitative differences between genetically similar bush and vine strains. Quantitative differences were difficult to resolve, although it did appear that in varieties of C. maxima exhibiting low levels of peroxidase activity, isozymes C3, C4, and C6 were less intense.

Depending upon the cultivars compared, total peroxidase activity in bush forms was either higher or lower than, or the same as their vine counterparts. Since the major bush genes in the varieties studied are believed to be allelic, the results indicate that the over-all genotype of squash varieties can influence the relative expression of peroxidase activity between bush and vine forms.
