Some Studies on Root Membrane Potentials

A. K. HELMY, E. A. FERREIRO and N. PEINEMANN

Instituto de Edafologia, Univerologia, Universidad National del Sur Bahia Blanca Argentina

Root membrane potentials were measured with two calomel electrodes by placing barley roots between two different potassium solutions in which the electrodes dip. These potentials were found to depend on the type, concentration, and pH of the salt used. This is taken to indicate that the transport number of K in the membrane is dependent on these factors. Furthermore, the potential measurements as a function of pH and KCI concentration allowed the determination of the point of zero charge of the barley root which was found to be at pH 2–9.
