About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover illustration: Bright-field and luminescence image of a transgenic aequorin-expressing Arabidopsis plant responding to low temperature. Aequorin is a bioluminescent indicator used to monitor cytosolic free calcium concentrations ([Ca2+]cyt). ‘Warm’ colours on this pseudocoloured image depict regions of high [Ca2+]cyt. Ca2+-dependent luminescence counts emitted in response to cooling by plants that had been cold acclimated (ACCLIMATED) and those having had no prior acclimation treatment (AMBIENT) are shown graphically. The bimodal cooling-induced Ca2+ response was markedly altered after cold acclimation, with the second peak being enhanced in the acclimated plants (see Knight and Knight, pp. 1679-1686).
