The top picture shows a wild-type tobacco plant (centre) and plants in which trehalose metabolism has been perturbed (see Paul and Pellny, pp. 539-547). Photosynthetic capacity is reduced in the plant on the left and increased in the one on the right. The second picture shows IKI staining of pollen grains from a barley plant containing an antisense gene for a regulatory protein kinase, SnRK1 (see Halford et al., pp. 467-475). Pollen grains carrying the transgene fail to stain, indicating that they do not contain starch, whereas normal pollen grains stain a deep blue-black. The third picture shows the effect of phloem-specific expression of a yeast invertase gene on potato tuber sprouting (see Hajirezaei et al., pp. 477-488). Three transgenic tubers are included with a wild-type control in the top left corner. The bottom picture shows a false colour image of firefly luciferase activity from a reporter gene driven by the promoter of a hexose transporter gene in Arabidopsis (see Sherson et al., pp. 525-531).
