Cover Illustration: The moss Physcomitrella patens has been used as a model to study how plant growth and development is regulated by the energy supply. The top picture shows a Physcomitrella colony regenerated from a spore collected near Uppsala, Sweden. The second picture shows the different cell types in Physcomitrella protonemal tissue. The third and fourth pictures show how chloronemal branching varies with the energy supply. The last two pictures show how the sensitivity to abscisic acid, which causes swelling of chloronemal cells, is more pronounced in a mutant knocked out for hexokinase 1 than in the wild type.
